Frequently Asked Questions
If your question is not answered here, please feel free to call us at (978) 470-2060.
-
How long do I have to complete the requirements of Driver's Ed? Students are required to complete the program within 2 years of the start date of their classroom session.
-
What is flexible enrollment? Massachusetts
requires that all students attend each of the 30 hours of class.
Andover Auto School understands that many students lead busy
lives. Students are welcome to "split sessions." For example, you may
wish to enroll in one of our many two week sessions...completing week 1
in September and week 2 in December. We can accommodate almost any
student's busy schedule. Please call (978) 470-2060 to discuss
enrollment and attendance options.
-
Where are classes held? Classes
are held at 89 Main St. Andover (above the Lantern Brunch, near the
Andover Bookstore) North Andover High School, Central Catholic
and Brooks School-North Andover MA
-
How do I make up a missed class? If
you missed a class, you are required by law to make up the specific
class you missed before you start your on road lessons. At the start of
the course, you are instructed to keep track of any missed classes. If
you do not know which class you missed, you must call Andover Auto
school so that we may research it for you. You are welcome to attend
any session for make up classes, but need to make sure you are
attending, specifically, the class you missed . Make up class inquiries
for sessions held at all locations will be answered directly through the Andover Auto School. Please call ahead to confirm.
-
When should I set up my driving hours and how many driving lessons will I have?
-
Each
student will complete 12 hours of driving and 6 hours observing another
student's lesson (Nine appointments--each 2 hours long) State law
requires parent(s) to provide 40 hours supervised driving practice in
addition to the hours spent with an instructor. Some of the
parent supervised driving should be completed prior to your first
lesson so that you will be ready to go out on main roads and traffic
situations with your instructor. You may be driving to and from another
student's home as part of your first lesson. All students under
the age of 18 must hold a valid learner's permit for six
"incident-free" months before they are eligible to try for their
driver's license. Driving appointments are scheduled over the
last three months of your permit period. Because our instructors
book up 2-6 weeks in advance, it is strongly recommended that you call
to arrange future appointments when you reach the two month point on
your permit. For example, you obtained your permit in
February--which means you are eligible to try for your license in
August. You should mark your calendar with a reminder to call us
in April to set up your future appointments. We will likely book
you for June and July so that you are finished several weeks before you
are hoping to go for your road test/license exam. After you have
attended your last driving lesson, we will mail your completion
record to the MA DOT in Boston. (see below for certificate
info) When calling to schedule appointments, please have your
permit number ready. Also, be prepared with your calendar so you
know which dates you can accept and commit to. Once you have set
up your appointments, we ask that you try your best to avoid canceling
as the other students fill in all the remaining time slots and you may
end up having to wait several weeks for a make up. (please read
the next section to review our cancellation fee/policy. Students
who live outside of our pick up area (Andover, North Andover, Methuen
& Lawrence) will meet their instructor in the parking lot at 89
Main St Andover. When calling, please leave a message if we
do not answer. Always include your first and last name and phone
number even if you think we already have it. Our phone line is very
busy, if your call goes to voicemail it is likely that we are already
assisting someone. The quickest way to reach us is to leave a
message rather than hanging up and redialing. Please have your permit
number ready. Also you should read our cancellation policy before calling to book your appointments.

What if I need to cancel/change a driving lesson appointment? At least 24* hours notice is required for all
cancellations. Changing an appointment is considered the same as
canceling. *Sunday and Monday appointments must be canceled
no later than 5 p.m. on the previous Friday to avoid fees. There
is a $65 fee to re-book a make up lesson without the minimum required
notice for all appointments. Repeat Cancellations:
Canceling numerous appointments is disruptive to other students and
also for the instructors and administrators. If more than two
driving appointments are canceled, there will be a $25 administration
fee charged for each future appointment canceled thereafter (for any
reason.) As stated above, the fee is increased to $65 any time
minimum notice is not given. It is also at our discretion to
remove from our system all future appointments. The student
would then be permitted to book only one at a time. If a student
keeps their appointment they may then call to set up the next.
In addition, your make up lesson is subject to the instructor’s
availability. If you must cancel an appointment call (978) 470-2060.
Leave a detailed message and if the appointment is within the next few
days, please notify your instructor as well.
-
What if I need to to withdraw my enrollment before I start the class?
There
is no fee to switch from one session to another. A $25
administration fee is charged if you withdraw from the session
completely.
- What is the refund policy?
Refunds are issued on a case by case basis only.
What does the parent class entail?
One
Parent must attend a two hour information class before a student can
obtain a driver ed certificate and set up their road test
appointment. There is a $25 fee for parent class. An
additional $25 administration fee is charged if a parent does not
show or cancels without a minimum of 24 hours notice. It is the
parent's responsibility to sign up and attend class. A parent
certificate will be issued on the night of the parent class. This
document is valid for 5 years. Please retain your copy as you may
need to produce it should another of your children attend a different
driving school. There is a $25 administration fee for additional
copies of the parent certificate.
Cerftificates
are kept on file with the Mass RMV. In most cases, your
insurance company will have access to this information
and you will not need to produce a copy. Should you require a
hard copy, you may call the RMV to request one: (617)-351-9368.
Effective 3/4/09
$15 Registry of Motor Vehicle Certificate fee is required: make check
payable to Mass DOT Turn in your check to the driving
instructor on your last lesson. We will forward
the payment along with your completion record to the MA DOT .
Allow 5-10 business days for the MA DOT to process your certificate
which will then be held on file. Your
insurance company has access to the MA DOT and can verify a driver ed
certificate online. A Road test appointment may be set up after the student has completed all requirements and the MA DOT has processed the driver ed certificate. Typically,
the MA DOT allows the future road test appointment to be arranged
when the student is within 28 days of eligiblity.
To verify that your certificate has been processed, use this link: https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/DriverEdLookup/driverlookup.aspx
To
use our road test service: ($95) call (978) 470-2060 - have your permit
number ready. Please DO NOT set up your own appointment if you
are using our road test service. Our instructor
will need to set
up the appointment to fit into his/her own schedule. Road
test dates are subject to change per order of the Registry of Motor
Vehicles.
To
set up your own road test using your own sponsor and vehicle: call the
RMV Student Road Test Hotline: 800 858-3926. Remember, you
may not set up an appointment until all requirements are fulfilled
and the driver ed certificate has been processed. Your vehicle
must meet RMV requirements which are listed in the driver's
manual.
All
students must bring a signed and completed road test application to
their road test appointment. Copy and paste this link

Will I drive in bad weather?
If
your instructor determines that the weather is unsafe for driving,
he/she will contact you directly to cancel your appointment.
